JANA NEL is a South African based self-taught ceramic artist, with a boutique home-based studio founded in 2017. Her ceramic art-vessels are a combination of wheel-thrown & handbuilt-work, intersecting art and functionality. Her vessels honours a distinctive feminine silhouette, combined with structural simplicity. Her inspiration draws from old word antiques & artefacts - the timeless beauty & soft contours of classical ceramic forms. By recreating these traditional, poetic shapes in hardy raw materials - stoneware, brass & 24-carat gold - she pays tribute to the natural, innate beauty of pottery as an ancient art-form, whilst showcasing the allure that these raw materials offer: texture, colour & aged brass patinas that develop over time. Her BA in Visual Communication from the University of Stellenbosch, served as the spring board for her creative career. |
